On Your First Day.

Your first day at learning a new language will obviously be a little daunting. It is very natural to feel that way because its going to be an entirely different experience to be able to speak in a new tongue.

That is why learning a language is so much more different than learning any other course. While learning a new language, it is entirely natural to not understand or follow things clearly and make tons of mistakes. In the beginning, it is only normal that you do so.

In the initial stages of learning a new language, your mind is just about to start getting exposed to a completely different sound and rhythm system . However, the human mind is so amazing, slowly you’ll see that you can make sense of a bit of what you hear on the first day of your class!
The main thing to remember before learning a new language is to have an open mind and keep practicing as much as possible. You’ll never regret it!

Turn Those Bad Habits Around!

One of the tricks that language student needs to eventually master is the art of developing and turning a certain study plan into a proper habit. Once it becomes a habit, it is really hard to get rid of. Therefore, instead of associating the word ‘habit’ with a lot of negative aspects, you turn it around by implementing a good study ‘habit’. It should be something like how you brush your teeth every morning without giving it a second thought. It’s a motorized action. This is what you need to turn your study plan into – a motorized action.

There are ways in which you can turn all these into good habits. For example, if you have been slacking off on exercise, you can trick your mind by wearing your gym clothes the night before and then when your alarm rings the next morning, you feel motivated to go. The same way, a little bit of prior preparation helps a lot!

Plan beforehand what exactly you’re going to study the next day. This way, you don’t waste any time the next day trying to figure out what exactly it is that you need to do.

Start revising what you’re going to study the next day, a day before. This way, it gives you a heads up on what you’re going to do and it will give you a start up the following day. It’ll be much easier to relate to what you’ve already read. Thus, planning ahead is always beneficial. With languages, it’s harder to form a habit because you learn something new everyday. But when you plan a day in advance, it makes things much easier for you.

What You Shouldn't Do While Studying.

The previous post spoke about how effective it is to write down your study tasks for the day. In addition to writing down what you MUST do, it is also equally necessary to keep a tab on what you should NOT be doing. Therefore, construct a list of things that you simply should not do in order to keep your study routine smoothly flowing.

I’m pretty sure 90% of our study time gets wasted because of a variety of distractions that we find it extremely hard to avoid. We’re constantly checking our phones and try to resist calling our friends or messaging them about a juicy piece of gossip – this ends up distracting us to an extent where we never end up sticking to our study plan.

Another huge distraction is following your friend’s Twitter or Facebook updates and checking them every few minutes. This really messes with your routine and you end up sitting online for hours – the vocabulary test you have tomorrow, forgotten.

The only way you can cope with having the perfect balance between social interaction and religious study time, is by making sure that you make a list of what you should NOT be doing during study hours. Thus, everytime you find yourself cheating during study hours, you’ll end up feeling bad about it and get back to studying.

Trust me, it works!

Help Yourself Study!

To be able to manage all the other miscellaneous things that you do along with your study routine, theres a solution to that too! For example, if you need to check your e-mail, watch TV or talk on the phone with a friend at least few times in a day, it is possible to do ALL of that as well as making sure you stick to your study plan! This way, you don’t feel too pressured. You can pick a specific time to check your e-mail – it can be for an hour. Tell yourself about how you can spend time checking your e-mail only from 1pm-2pm.At 2pm, no matter what happens, pry yourself away from the computer screen and continue studying. Not only will you feel better that you got back to studying again, but also will not worry about checking your e-mail for the rest of the day!

If you don’t map out a concrete schedule like so, you’ll end up checking your mail or sitting online everytime you feel like taking a break and you’ll find it too hard to stop after an hour. This way, you trick your brain into believing that this routine is a habit. A habit is merely the mechanical sensors of your brain telling you what to do. This way, you’ll end up doing it often without even thinking because it will start functioning as a habit!

Put It In Writing!

I hope all of you that were facing problems when it came to getting down and studying embraced the little suggestion that I had in the previous post. If it didn’t work, no problem – I have another one I’d like to share. This method has proven to really help me out every time I have felt like I simply cannot urge myself to study. Often, when you don’t revise the language every single day, the amount you have to study just keeps piling up and before you know it, you’re in big trouble.

I always keep a journal where I write down everything that I exactly plan on doing or would like to finish in a day or in an evening. Writing on a piece of paper rather than typing something out always helps much more because writing it by hand sort of confirms it and makes it solid that you absolutely HAVE to revise the vocabulary of at least 20 words in a particular amount of time. This way, you don’t end up wasting an entire day JUST doing 20 words and can quickly finish whatever you have allotted yourself for the day and have the rest of the time to yourself!

This is an extremely useful trick. The more specific you get, the better. Allot yourself an hour’s time and a 15 minute break in between and I’m pretty sure at the end of that hour, you’ll know those 20 words by heart. The accomplishment of finally finishing what you had scheduled for the day will make you feel great about yourself and you will look forward to studying as per your routine the next time.

Hope you all ace the language courses at ELTIS-SIFIL!

Get Down To Studying!

People often break their head when it comes to really getting down and studying a new language that they are learning. When you begin studying a new language, making sure that you devote at least an hour and a half to it everyday, is absolutely crucial.

The trick to making sure that you stick to your study routine. That, is where we all fail. There are a number of ways that you can prepare your mind to follow your study plan diligently.
The first thing to do, would be to have action associations. Have you ever wondered why you end up doing certain things – like going to gym only when you’re home and not when you’re staying over at a cousin’s place? This only happens because you associate certain things around you with the fact that you need to hit the gym or go for a run – like when you see your track pants, or your shoes!

Thus, in order to help you study regularly and constantly having it at the back of your mind, would be using these very action associations. You could make sure that a certain area in your room is the area where you ONLY study that language. Or, you play a certain genre of music ONLY while studying it – classical instrumental music ALWAYS works!

Give it a go. Soon, where you glance at that area of your room, you’ll feel a tug at the back of your brain, urging you to study! I’m sure it’ll help you ace the language! More tips coming in the next post!
